Letter 01
The first letter of the ‘Edged In Black!’ has arrived! There’s always something exciting about receiving a hand-written letter in the post.
Morality tales are at the core of my practise, whether lighthearted or heavy, I feel that an audience can really converse about their individual sense of right and wrong. It’s an inclusive approach to art, where participants might be unaware that their contributions are vital to a collective bigger picture.
In the vein of older media, I’ve captured the process using my battered digital camera. (I’d like to think it’s one step away from wearing villainous black gloves at a confession booth.)
My intention with this project is to let the anonymous recipient speak freely, so without further ado, here is letter 01…
Text: “It was the final day of the month. I was one sale away from hitting my target and securing myself a healthy bonus in commission, but without that final sale I would receive nothing.
I worked in mobile sales, and on this final day of the month an elderly woman walks into the store. She told me she had broken her phone and that she might need a new one, despite only having this one a few months. I looked it over and sure enough the phone was working perfectly fine. She had just turned off an important setting by mistake.
I did not tell her this and instead sold her a brand new phone to secure my commission and took her thanks for selling her a working phone.”
